Through A Lens Darkly (Black Photographers and emergence of a people)

The film that we watched in class really opened my eyes and caught my attention when the narrator said "All secrets reside in family photo albums". That is very true because just by looking at a picture, you don't know who those people are or what they are going through, whether good or bad. It also made me realize how important it is to take family pictures in general and not necessarily posed pictures but off guards because they tell more of a story.

These two images might not be the most visually appealing pictures out there but they mean and say a lot to me because they have a story behind them like every picture does. These are the two most important people in my life; my brother and my mother. People don't really know them the way I know them. The first image is of my brother in his room. I wanted to capture him in a position I always see him when I go into his room. He's always laying in bed on his phone. I always had a mental picture in my head but now I have a physical one. The second image is of my mother. From the outside, she seems like a very serious and emotionless person and thats what a lot of people see her as but in reality, she is very goofy and loves to laugh and that is exactly what

she did when I told her I was going to take a picture of her. I told her to put her hat on and thats how she put it on as a joke and started making weird faces and I captured a few of those images but she told me to delete them. That also made me realize how people care so much about how others see them. I decided to leave this image in instead of the one of her posing and smile because this picture shows who she really is and what people don't know her as.

After watching this film, I will definitely be taking more family photos that are not posed. Those pictures have a deeper meaning and have a memory attached to them and thats whats important.
